Small miracles

By Walter J. Lyng

For former Gazette copy editor David Sherman, it wasn’t too hard to find a source of inspiration behind the drama of his new play The Daily Miracle.

Described as “a bittersweet ode to a rapidly fading industry,” The Daily Miracle, presented by Infinitheatre, tells the story of four copy editors attempting to put out a newspaper over the course of a night as a snowstorm rages outside and corporate owners meet to decide the fate of the paper.

“I was inspired by the situation of all these people working very hard … dedicated to getting the paper out when not too many people seem to care anymore,” says Sherman of his former coworkers. “It’s a story about how various circumstances conspire to bring the feared disintegration of the newspaper business to a head.”

For those who just can’t get enough of the news, a panel discussion will be hosted after an early showing of the play on Wednesday, Feb. 3 featuring four senior journalists : Alan Allnutt, publisher and editor-in-chief of The Gazette; Henry Aubin, author, historian, and columnist at The Gazette; Josée Boileau, editor-in-chief at Le Devoir and Françoise Guénette, freelance journalist and reporter for Radio-Canada.

The Daily Miracle runs from Jan. 26 to Feb. 14 at Bain St. Michel. For tickets, call 514-987-1774.
