Beaconsfield prepares for its Centennial

By Kevin Woodhouse

This coming June 4th, 2010 will be a historic day for the city of Beaconsfield as it celebrates 100 years of being incorporated. And to celebrate its upcoming centennial, the city has initiated a volunteer steering committee who have already reached out to the city's 40 community associations.
The committee has pitched two types of projects to help citizens celebrate the historic birthday. The first is an annual event that incorporates the 100 year anniversary or a new project targeted for the centennial party.

While the city has set some money aside to help with logistics, the community groups are encouraged to hold fundraisers to help prepare their event that must be free for the public and open to all.

Projects could deal with what the city's future lies ahead or perhaps a blast into the past with a recreation of what Beaconsfield looked like in 1910.

Sports groups will likely invite past alumni, including Olympic and professional athletes who have called Beaconsfield home at one time or another, suggested Michele Janis, division head for leisure and recreation as well as a member of the centennial steering committee.

Janis, said that while the official kickoff to the centennial will be this coming June, "we want to announce the events soon as we want to have the program prepared for February 25th, 2010 which is 100 days before the official date."

"This is going to be a very special event for the city and we plan to hit the ground running in January," said Janis.  "We are looking for volunteers and a sponsorship coordinator is also needed."

Any Beaconsfield resident who would like to take part in the upcoming centennial so go online to beaconsfield100@beaconsfield.ca or consult the town's website.
