Around the TownsJPPS CHILDREN’S CENTRE OPENS The JPPS Children's Centre, at 5838 Westminster Ave. in Côte St. Luc, officially opened to preschoolers Dec. 7. Côte St. Luc mayor Anthony Housefather, council members and those associated with the JPPS-Bialik family “celebrated the existence of a brand new, state-of-the-art building in which to guide children's first steps on their journey of learning,” says a JPPS announcement.
CSL SNOW REMOVAL Côte St. Luc informed motorists of rules “to ensure that snow removal is done in a safe, timely and effective way. Residents are called upon to do their part to help make their roads safe this winter” so that “once precipitation has stopped, the accumulated snow along the edge of these roadways is removed by our snow-blowing equipment.” Some elements: •”The city of Côte St. Luc puts temporary no parking signs on many streets before our snow clearing operation. The goal is to prevent delays in snow clearing caused by vehicles parked on city streets.” •”If you see a temporary no parking sign near your parked vehicle, please move your vehicle. If you don't, your vehicle may be towed to an adjacent street and you will be fined $97. If your vehicle is towed, you can call 514-485-6960 to find out where it was moved.” •”If you see temporary no parking signs on your street, you might want to consider parking your car overnight at a nearby city parking lot. Call Côte St. Luc public security at 514-485-6960 to find the parking lot closest to your home. (City parking lots may not be used overnight in normal times.)”
HAMPSTEAD BUDGET MEETING The meeting to announce Hampstead’s 2010 budget will take place 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 11, just before the regular monthly council meeting at the Adessky Community Centre in Hampstead Park. Budgets are usually adopted in December, but the suburbs had to wait for Montreal and the island-wide agglomeration council. Other council meetings during the year take place 8 p.m. Monday Feb. 1, March 1, Wednesday April 7, Monday May 3, June 7, July 5, Aug. 2, Tuesday Sept. 7, Monday Oct. 4, Nov. 1 and Dec. 6.
HAMPSTEAD OVERNIGHT PARKING Hampstead announced that the town is exercising Chanukah and Christmas overnight parking tolerance. “From Dec. 11, 2009 to Jan. 5, 2010, Hampstead public security will exercise parking tolerance for overnight parking from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m,” says the announcement. “Daytime parking rules will remain in effect.” For more information, call town hall — until Dec. 23 — at 514-369-8200 or public security at 514-369-8250 (24 hour dispatch). MOWEST BUDGET MEET POSTPONED Montreal West announced that the adoption of the municipal budget for 2010, scheduled for yesterday, Tuesday, Dec. 15 at 7:00 p.m. “is postponed to a later date that will be communicated though another prior public notice.” The regular Dec. 15 council meeting did take place at 8 p.m. — Joel Goldenberg More NDG meetings Councillors representing the two NDG districts of Côte des Neiges-NDG are asking for more monthly council meetings to be held in their areas. Loyola councillor Susan Clarke and Peter McQueen, elected in the NDG district, asked their colleagues to consider rethinking holding most meetings at the Cummings House (5151 Côte St. Catherine Rd.). “It would be fair to have more meetings take place in NDG,” Clarke said. “I’d like to encourage our borough to figure out a way to do that.” Councillors Marvin Rotrand noted that, in absence of a borough hall that could accommodate citizens, the Cummings House is a reasonable choice because of its proximity to public transport and because he said the borough isn’t charged for the space. “It’s almost a no-win situation,” noted Darlington councillor Lionel Perez. “We have a large population in the largest borough. What’s most important is to have a place where citizens can ask questions to our elected officials.” The next borough council meeting is at Cummings House on Jan. 11, 7 p.m.
