CSL DEC. 10 OLYMPIC FLAME VENUE Côte St. Luc announced last week that residents and others who are also fans of the Olympics can watch the Olympic flame pass by on Dec. 10 on viewing stands provided by the city in front of the Côte St. Luc Shopping Centre on Côte St. Luc Road. According to a city announcement, “the torch relay will arrive in front of the viewing stands at approximately 1:45 p.m. as part of a convoy of vehicles, which will include torchbearer shuttles, media vehicles, relay support vehicles and police cruisers. Temporary rolling road closures will ensure the safety of the torchbearers and spectators lining the relay route. The crowd will see a new torchbearer carry the flame every 300 metres through the community as it travels on its 45,000-kilometre-long journey across Canada — the longest domestic torch relay in Olympic history.” The city will also provide free hot chocolate, while supplies last. LAURENT TRIBUTE Borough mayor Alan DeSousa paid tribute at last week’s council meeting to Marcel Roy, a resident who was very involved in the community and died Nov. 3 at the age of 82. DeSousa offered condolences to the family and friends of Roy, and said he was a tireless volunteer beloved by all, and who conducted himself with grace. Roy was known for being involved with local sports and leisure activities at the St. Hippolyte parish, was also a volunteer board member of the St. Laurent CHSLD-CLSC and helped in the Demeures Sainte-Croix project. — Joel Goldenberg ••• Applebaum promoted, Rotrand next? Montreal mayor Gérald Tremblay unveiled his executive committee last week, which he himself will chair, and among those to receive promotions is Côte des Neiges-NDG borough mayor Michael Applebaum. He and St. Laurent mayor Alan De Sousa were both named vice-presidents of the EC. Applebaum has also inherited the citizen services portfolio, which includes the oft-scrutinized snow removal dossier. Côte des Neiges councillor Helen Fotopulos was put in charge of culture, heritage and the status of women. Meanwhile, Snowdon councillor Marvin Rotrand, who is presently the vice-chairman of the STM, may also be moving up in the ranks. There were veiled suggestions at the borough council last week that he may end up as president of the city’s transit authority. Rotrand said an official announcement would be made in December. — Dan Delmar |
