Dubrofsky is cooking for autism research

By Mike Cohen

Two years ago, Côte St. Luc’s Karen Dubrofsky, along with her friends Donna Rabinovitch and Heidi Gossack-Majnemer, published Montreal Cooks for the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) Foundation. Together with its French counterpart Les Saveurs de Montréal, the book has raised more than $700,000 for gynecological oncology at the MUHC. A few years earlier, she and a friend raised $500,000 for the Centre for Colon and Rectal Surgery at the MUHC.Well, Dubrofsky is at it again with a sequel called Cooking With Canada’s Best.

This time the beneficiary is Autism Research in Canada. Dubrofsky travelled from Newfoundland to Victoria to assemble the book and while attending a health food show in Toronto, she happened to meet David Patchell Evans, owner of Goodlife Fitness, and approached him with the idea of the book. “I did not have a final decision on who was going to benefit financially,” she said.

“He looked me in the eyes and asked whether I would consider doing the book for autism. I knew right then and there that he had an autistic child, thus funds raised will benefit the Kilee Patchell Evans Autism Research Group.”  The book is available in stores. COMEDY IN CHOMEDEY: In the spring of this year, a group of young people sat down and worked out an idea to put on a small production of short comedy skits mixed with a few musical numbers. Some in the group performed with The Becket Players and the result is  an event called Comedy In Chomedey. It will take place Oct. 24 (8:30 p.m.) and Oct. 25 (4:30 p.m.) at the Young Israel of Chomedey Synagogue (1025 Elizabeth Blvd.).

The production is  inspired by Chomedey resident Josh Ryan Gontovnick, with the help of his sister Lisa Ashley as well as Natalie Darbyson, Candace Holder, Jeremie Estegassy, Jelani Duhaney and Brandon Gontovnick. Money raised will go to the SPCA. Info: Josh at babyboy_922@ hotmail.com or Lisa at lisa.carebear @gmail.com.
